Ingredients

Cupcake Batter:

  • 1 ⅔ cups freshly milled soft white wheat flour finely milled (192 grams)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon nutmeg
  • ¼ teaspoon allspice
  • pinch of cloves
  • ½ cup melted butter 115 grams
  • ½ cup brown sugar 80 grams
  • cup unsweetened applesauce 87 grams
  • ½ cup apple cider 122 grams
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs

Spiced Buttercream:

  • ½ cup softened butter 115 grams
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • pinch of nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 cups powdered sugar 200 grams
  • 1-2 tablespoons apple cider

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. and line a muffin pan with liners or grease.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, beat the butter and brown sugar together.
  • Add the applesauce, apple cider, vanilla, and eggs and beat until combined.
  • Add the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves and mix until just combined.
  • Scoop the batter into the prepared muffin pan and bake for 20-22 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
  • While the cupcakes cool, prepare the icing by beating the butter, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla together.
  • Add the powdered sugar and apple cider and beat until fluffy.
  • Spread or pipe the buttercream onto the cooled cupcakes.
